No-run zones in flag football
A no-run zone is a 5-yard strip where the offense isn't allowed to run the ball. If the ball is spotted inside one, the play must be a pass.
Where they are
- NFL FLAG: the 5 yards before midfield and the 5 yards before the goal line, at both ends.
- IFAF (Olympic): only the 5 yards in front of each goal line.
- NFL FLAG 8U and younger: removed in regular-season league play (still used in 8U tournaments).
- NFHS high school: no no-run zones.
What it means for play calling
Handoffs, sweeps and reverses are off the table, so the defense knows a pass is coming and can drop everyone into coverage. Use quick, spread-out pass plays: a corner fade, stick or snag.
Common mistakes
- Running a sweep from the 4-yard line: illegal, loss of down.
- Forgetting the midfield zone on your own side in NFL FLAG.
- The QB running it in herself: never legal, in or out of the zone.
