5v5 play · Spread
Mesh
Two drags cross in the middle. Man defenders have to fight through traffic, so one of them comes open running away.
Routes
- CHitch
Run hard 6 yards, stop, turn back to the QB. Quick and safe.
- XDrag
Shallow across the field. Run away from man coverage, sit in a zone hole.
- YSeam
Straight up the inside. Splits two deep defenders.
- ZOver
A drag at 5 yards: it crosses over the other drag.
- QRead
Read X → Z → C. Throw as she breaks open.
The QB's read, step by step
- X on the drag. Look here first, right from the snap.
- Z on the over. Covered? Move your eyes here next.
- C on the hitch. The last look. Get the ball out before the 7 seconds run out.
Coaching points
- Line up in Spread: two wide receivers near the sidelines, the slot inside, the center over the ball.
- Every route at the same depth on every snap, so the QB can throw on time.
- No picks: receivers cross near each other, never into a defender on purpose.
- Run it to both sides: mirror it and it's two plays.
When to call it
Against man coverage: the routes are built to win one-on-one. Mirror it to attack the other side.
